How long does it take for your website to get to the top of Google?

HT Vũ Ngọc 27 Apr, 2025 Google Marketing

I’ve been working in SEO for over 9 years, dealing with countless clients, and I’ve realized that all of them always ask themselves the same question: “How long will it take for my website to rank on Google?”

Honestly, it’s not easy to answer right away because it depends on many different factors, such as the strength of the website, the level of competition, the budget, skills, etc.

However, Ahrefs has given us a specific answer through experiments and historical ranking data. So now, let’s take a closer look at the answer.

How old does a website need to be to rank at the top?

First, let’s look at how Ahrefs determined the age of websites that are currently ranking the highest.

They randomly selected 2 million keywords and aggregated data from the top 10 pages ranking for those keywords. The result is shown in the graph below:

Note: The age of these websites is calculated from the date Ahrefs’ crawler first discovered the page.

From this chart, we can see that nearly all websites that rank in the Top 10 results are at least 2 years old, with the number 1 spot being nearly 3 years old.

Additionally, Ahrefs mentioned that only about 22% of websites created within 1 year managed to get into the Top 10.

So, the question is: What percentage of websites under 1 year old appear at each ranking position?

The result is not too surprising — rankings are mostly dominated by older websites.

How long does it take for a page to rank on Google?

To answer this question, Ahrefs randomly selected 2 million pages that their crawler first discovered one year ago.

They then tracked the position history of each page and the changes for any keyword they ranked for.

Here’s the result:

Out of the 2 million pages selected, only 5.7% appeared in the Top 10 search results within 1 year for at least one keyword.

Pages with a higher DR (Domain Rating) score will always rank better than pages with a lower DR score. This isn’t surprising since Ahrefs’ Domain (which shows the backlink profile strength of a website) has a significant impact on Google rankings.

Then, they conducted further analysis to understand how the websites that made it into the 5.7% of the Top 10 results ranked.

Guess what happened? Most of the websites in that ranking range were created between 61 and 182 days ago.

In other words, it takes about 2 to 6 months for a page to appear in Google’s Top 10 search results.

But this conclusion is not entirely accurate, because the data only represents the 5.7% of websites that made it into the Top 10 within a year. Meanwhile, the remaining 94.3% of the 2 million websites studied did not achieve this.

Therefore, Ahrefs recalculated the numbers based on the monthly search volume of keywords:

The result they found is that only 0.3% of pages under 1 year old rank in the Top 10 for a keyword with more than 50K searches per month.

So, what makes the difference for that 5.7%? It’s when the ranking keywords are divided by their total search volume:

This shows that with keywords that have low search volume and competition, you can rank in a short time. However, for major keywords, it will take almost a year to get into the Top 10.

General Conclusion

Back to the main point, does Ahrefs’ research help us answer the question “How long does it take for a website to rank on Google?”

The answer is definitely no.

However, it indicates that in order to rank in Google’s Top 10, a website needs to be around 1 year old.

As an exception, you might achieve this within 2-6 months, but it heavily depends on your SEO optimization and the level of competition for the keyword you’re targeting.
